Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan met World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva on 13 October 2022.
Minister Balakrishnan and Director-General Tedros had an in-depth discussion on global health issues. They agreed on the importance of strengthening global pandemic surveillance, increasing transparency and countering pandemic misinformation. Minister Balakrishnan commended the WHO for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed Singapore’s full support for the WHO’s central role in the evolving global health architecture. Director-General Tedros acknowledged Singapore’s active surveillance of its domestic COVID-19 situation, including continued high intensity testing and genomic sequencing. They also discussed the need to be prepared for future and emerging pandemics, including Ebola and monkeypox.
Singapore will continue to support vaccine multilateralism and efforts to strengthen the global system for pandemic preparedness and response.
