Visit by Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi under the SR Nathan Fellowship Programme, 25 July 2025

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr Rafael Mariano Grossi visited Singapore under the S R Nathan Fellowship on 25 July 2025. He called on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong, and met with Minister for Manpower and Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology Tan See Leng and Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu. Director General Grossi and Minister Grace Fu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to renew the Singapore-IAEA Third Country Training Programme. He also visited the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute and the National Environment Agency facilities.

 

Director General Grossi delivered a public lecture titled “Energy and Development: Working Towards the Safe, Secure, and Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Science and Technology in Southeast Asia.”

                                              

During the meetings, Singapore expressed strong support for IAEA’s important work in promoting nuclear safety, security and the peaceful use of nuclear applications to support sustainable development. Both sides also reaffirmed the longstanding and close cooperation between Singapore and the IAEA, and expressed commitment to strengthen this collaboration.

 

Over the years, Singapore has benefitted from the IAEA’s expertise in areas such as nuclear medicine, imaging and oncology. Singapore looks forward to continuing working with the IAEA to enhance our capabilities, as well as support capacity-building efforts among developing countries in nuclear science and technology-related areas, which can help address global challenges such as climate change, cancer care and food insecurity. The renewal of the MOU will support such capacity building efforts.
