State Visit of Governor-General of The Commonwealth of Australia Sam Mostyn, 3 to 6 August 2025

04 August 2025

The Governor-General of Australia, Sam Mostyn, is on a State Visit to Singapore. Governor-General Mostyn called on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and met Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong on 4 August 2025.

President Tharman and Governor-General Mostyn reaffirmed the longstanding friendship and close cooperation between Singapore and Australia, underpinned by a deep reservoir of trust, economic complementarities and excellent people-to-people ties. They welcomed the multi-faceted and forward-looking nature of the bilateral relationship, as Singapore and Australia commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year. They discussed a range of issues, including how both countries could learn from each other’s strategies in supporting mental health among the young, and in developing and updating skills for a rapidly changing labour market. In commemoration of 60 years of diplomatic relations, Governor-General Mostyn presented President Tharman with a specially commissioned Australian indigenous artwork, and President Tharman reciprocated with an artwork symbolising Singapore’s harmonious growth, creativity and diversity across six decades by Leong Sijun, a young, differently abled Singaporean artist.

Governor-General Mostyn and Prime Minister Wong affirmed the strong people-to-people and cultural exchanges between our two countries. They also underscored the importance of the Singapore-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) and looked forward to the upgrade of the CSP later this year when Prime Minister Wong visits Australia. The upgraded CSP will see deepened bilateral cooperation in areas such as defence, supply chain resilience, renewable energy, and cyber and critical technologies.

Governor-General Mostyn also visited the National Orchid Garden where a new orchid hybrid, the Aranda Sam Mostyn, was named in her honour.

President Tharman will host a State Banquet in honour of Governor-General Mostyn this evening.
